The Steps | Umrah ka Tarika: How to Perform Umrah
Here’s the best bit now—how to do Umrah. There are only four primary steps. We can simplify them so they are very obvious.
Step One: Under Ihram
Ihram is a unique state in which you become prepared and pristine for Umrah. Do this at Miqat, a site known before you arrive at Makkah, in keep of your pilgrimage.
- Bathe to freshen oneself.
- Dress in iconical Ihram.
- Your intention is to be Oriya (Niyyah) like “I am performing Umrah for Allah.”
To me, wearing Ihram was a clean slate. From that point on, only Allah and I were there.
Step Two: Perform Tawaf
Tawaf is seven times walking about the Kaaba. This way:
- Begin at the Black Stone corner and travel counterclockwise.
- Every time the Black Stone passes, repeat “Allahu Akbar” (God is Great).
- Pray two Rak’ahs close to the Kaaba after seven rounds.
Once more, it was amazing to circle the Kaaba; everyone was praying together, and it felt really special.
Step Three: Sa’i
Sa’i is seven times walking between Safa and Marwah hills. Here’s how to proceed:
- Begin at Safa and stroll toward Marwah. That is one journey.
- Go back and forth until you have completed seven journeys.
This section made me remind of Hagar, who long ago relied on God. Though it was exhausting, it was very well worth it.
Step Four: Reduce Your Hair Volume
- Men trim their hair or shave their heads.
- Women trim little by little, like a fingertip breadth.
